How to Perform Ghusl Janaba In Islam

Ghusl janaba is an obligatory bath for every Muslim who has reached the age of puberty in an unclean state. The bath serves as a way to purify their body from impurities caused mainly by the following states:

Discharge of Semen

Discharge of semen may occur when you are awake or asleep and mostly be in form of a wet dream. When you notice this discharge it is compulsory to perform ghusl janaba.

Sexual Intercourse

If you have sexual intercourse it is mandatory for you to perform ghusl, whether your intercourse is halal or haram, also whether you discharge sperm or not.

Menstrual Discharge

Ghusl is obligatory on a woman who is experiencing menstrual discharge.

Anyone in the state of janabah is not allowed to do the following acts:

Visiting the masjid (mosque)

It is totally prohibited for anyone who is in a state of janaba to go to the mosque either to pray or sit. The person must ensure that he/she is in a state of purity before visiting the mosque.

These claims were backed by verses from the Quran in which Allah authorized believing Muslims to perform ghusl janabah.

O you who believe! Do not go near prayers (salat) when you are under an obligation to perform a bath… until you have washed yourselves…” (Quran  an-Nisa 4:43)

O you who believe! When you rise up for prayer… if you are junub, then purify (yourselves). (Quran al-Maeda 5:6).

Touching the Quran

The Quran is a holy book that should not be touched when in the state to perform janaba.

How To Perform Ghusl Janaba

The prescription of ghusl janaba is based on a narration reported by Aisha (peace be upon her), the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), where she narrated how the Prophet (peace be upon him) perform ghusl janaba.

When the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) performed Ghusl from Janaba, he would wash his hands, the perform wudu’ as for prayer, then run his finger through his hair until he was sure the water had reached the scalp, then he would pour water over his head three times, then wash the rest of his body.”

And if any part of these steps in performing ghusl janaba is omitted, your ghusl is invalid.

1. Make an intention in your mind (heart) that you are about to perform ghusl janaba. It is a hateful act to recite your intention when in the bathroom or toilet.

2. Say Bismillah

3. Wash your hand three times

4. Wash your private part thoroughly and make sure every impurity (blood or semen)
is completely gone.

5. Perform Wudu’ just like the one you do before every prayer (salat).

6. Pour water over your head (three times), and rub it with your hand, until the water touches your hair.

7. Then wash and rub the entire body with water, making sure the water reaches every part of the body, starting from the right side of the body (i.e. shoulder, arm, and leg) and then to the left side.

Conclusion

There are ways ghusl janaba is performed based on different opinions from scholars of knowledge. It is advisable to follow the steps your scholar prescribe to you and do not condemn anyone whose ghusl is different from yours.
