Mehmet Cengiz, better known by his stage name Dr. Oz, is a former cardiothoracic surgeon, author, professor emeritus, and television personality of Turkish descent.

 

He is the first Muslim to receive either major party's nomination for U.S. Senate. He is the Republican candidate for the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate race in 2022. Senate. His father immigrated to the United States from turkey making him possess dual citizenship.

In 2022, Oz claimed to be a Muslim and stated that he "chose to align his ideas with Sufism, a mystical Islamic group." He also declared himself to be a "secular Muslim," rejecting Sharia law.

Dr. Oz holds degrees from the Universities of Pennsylvania and Harvard. After that, in 1986, he started his surgical residency at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He joined Columbia University's faculty of surgery in 2001 and later retired as a professor emeritus in 2018.

 

Before returning to Turkey, he spent several years as the Medical Center of Delaware's chief of thoracic surgery where he received his cardiothoracic surgery training at Emory University in Atlanta.

President Donald Trump appointed Dr. Oz to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition for a two-year term in 2018, the White House stated.

 

Oz declared his intention to run for Pennsylvania's open United States Senate position in the Republican primary in 2022.

Following their work on a successful heart transplant for Frank Torre, the brother of New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, during the 1996 World Series, Oz and Rose gained public attention that year.

In September 2016, while running for president, Donald Trump made an appearance on The Dr. Oz Show. After more than a decade on the air, The Dr. Oz Show broadcast its final episode on January 14, 2022.
