Question
Is tattooing haram in Islam? What if the tattoo is permanent or temporary? And what if one has a permanent tattoo on his/her body?
Answer
Praise be to Allaah.
Tattooing is a process of beautifying the skin by adding
colored material under the surface. The skin is pierced with a sharp device,
which is in the form of a needle that holds the inks or dye to lower level of the
skin.
Tattooing any part of the body is haraam in all kinds,
whether it hurts or not since it leads to altering the creation of Allaah, and
because the Messenger of Allah (Pbuh) cursed anyone who carries out tattoos for
people and the person for who tattoo is made.
It was narrated by Alqama: ‘Abdullah (bin
Masud) said: "Allah curses those ladies who practice tattooing and those
who get themselves tattooed, and those ladies who remove the hair from their
faces and those who make artificial spaces between their teeth in order to look
more beautiful whereby they change Allah's creation." (Sahih al-Bukhari Volume
6, Book 60, Number 408)
The Hadith above confirm that the one who does tattoo is
cursed and that tattooing is a major sin. Some scholars have a different opinion
as to the reason why tattooing is forbidden. Some categorized it has a form of
dishonesty and while some said it is no haram so far it’s not permanent on the
skin.
But the more acceptable and sound opinion is that, so far
it changes the creation of Allah, it’s highly recommended to stay away from it.
Permanent and Temporary Tattoos
Temporary tattoos are those which are not permanent and can be erased at any point in time, which is in fact not haram just like hena. But the permanent tattoo which becomes part of the skin is highly prohibited in Islam.
As
earlier discussed, scholar’s views vary on this particularly on the issue of
tattooing but know that above narrated above has prohibited tattooing.
Lastly,
if you have a permanent tattoo on your body, do not see yourself as a cursed
person, seek Allah’s forgiveness and He will surely forgive you.
