Question
On
what basis is it recommended by the sunnah to say “Ameen” behind the imam or
oneself after surah al-Fatiha?
Answer
It is sunnah for both the Imam leading a
prayer and the followers to say “Ameen” out loud after the end of Surah
al-Fatiha.
There are evidence of this prophetic acts
recorded in the Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sahih Abu Dawud,
and many others.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Say
Amin" when the Imam says it and if the Amin of any one of you coincides with
that of the angels then all his past sins will be forgiven." Ibn Shihab
said, "Allah's Apostle used to Say "Amin."
(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 12,
Number 747)
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "Say
Amen' when the Imam says "Ghair-il-maghdubi 'alaihim wala-ddal-lin; not
the path of those who earn Your Anger (such as Jews) nor of those who go astray
(such as Christians); all the past sins of the person whose saying (of Amin)
coincides with that of the angels, will be forgiven.
(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 12,
Number 749)
Abu Huraira reported:
The Messenger of Allah (may peace
be upon him) said: Say Amin when the Imam says Amin, for it anyone's utterance
of Amin synchronizes with that of the angels, he will be forgiven his past
sins.
(Sahih Muslim: Book 004, Number 0811)
Wã'iI bin Hujr narrated:
"When the Messenger of Allah (peace
be upon him) used to say: '... nor those who have gone astray’, he would then
say: 'Amin' and raise his voice with it."
(Abu Dawud: 932)
All listed above authentic Hadiths
proves that it is sunnah for the Imam and the people behind to say “Ameen” out
loud upon completing surah al-Fatiha.
Even though some scholars have different views
on this act, but it is most correct to say “Ameen” for both the Imam and
the followers.
Note: This
ruling can only be practiced in prayers when the Imam recites loudly such as Fajr, Magrib, Ish’a,
exclude Zuhr and Asr because the Imam recite surah al-Fatiha silently.
