Eating food gives energy to the body in order to carry out day to day activities easily; without food, nobody can survive for long.
It is Sunnah for a Muslim to make dua (supplication) before and after eating or drinking. This is the way The Prophet (peace be upon him) has recommended every Muslim to do before any consumption of meals.

Before Eating
بِسْمِ الله
Translation
In the name of Allah
Transliteration
Bismi l-lahi

OR
بِسْمِ للهِ في أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِـرِه
Translation
(recite this dua If you forgot to say bismi-l-lahi before eating) With the name of Allah, in the beginning, and in the end.
Transliteration
Bismi l-lahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi

OR
اللّهُـمَّ بارِكْ لَنا فيهِ وَأَطْـعِمْنا خَـيْراً مِنْـه، اللّهُـمَّ بارِكْ لَنا فيهِ وَزِدْنا مِنْه
Translation
O Allah, bless it for us and feed us better than it. O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.
Transliteration
Allahumma barik lana fihi, wa at’imna khyran minhu. Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu.

After Eating
الْحَمْـدُ للهِ الَّذي أَطْعَمَنـي هـذا وَرَزَقَنـيهِ مِنْ غَـيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلا قُوَّة
Translation
All praise is for Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any might nor
power from myself.
Transliteration
Al hamdu li-l-lahi ladhi at’amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayrin hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.

الْحَمْـدُ للهِ حَمْـداً كَثـيراً طَيِّـباً مُبـارَكاً فيه، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلا مُسْتَغْـنىً عَنْـهُ رَبَّـنا
Translation
Allah be praised with an abundant beautiful blessed praise, a never-ending praise, a praise which we will bid farewell to and an indispensable praise, He is our Lord.
Transliteration
Al hamdu li-l-lahi hamdan kathiran, tayyiban, mubaraka fihi, ghayra makfiyyin wa la muwadda’in, wa la mustaghnan’ anhu rabbana.
