Question
Is
April Fool day a major sin in Islam?
Answer
Praise be to Allaah (swt)
Islam denounces events like April Fools’ Day which is
based on immoral actions. It’s popular among the Muslims and non-Muslims society
that April is the month of intimidation, deception, lies, peoples are sending
messages or even calling to put fear in someone heart or make him laugh in the
name of April fool. It is important for people to know that such immoral
behaviour is not Islamic, and not morally sound.
Allaah the Most High says: "And if you obey most of
those on earth, they will mislead you far away from the Path of Allaah. They
follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie"
(Qur'an 6:116)
"O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule
[another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule
[other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one
another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the
name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it
is those who are the wrongdoers"
(Qur'an 49:11)
1. Narrated by Abdur-Rahman ibn Abu Lailan (may Allaah be
pleased with him) that the companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and
blessings be upon him) told us they were travelling with the Messenger of
Allaah (Pbuh) One man fell asleep and some of them took his rope (as a joke),
then he panicked. So the Messenger of Allaah (Pbuh) said, “It is not lawful for
a Muslim to frighten another Muslim (even if it is for a joke).”
(Sunan Abu Dawoud)
2. Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Masud (may Allaah be pleased
with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man
will keep speaking the truth and striving to speak the truth until he is
recorded with Allaah as a man of the truth. Lying leads to wickedness and
wickedness leads to Hell fire. A man will keep telling lies and striving to
tell lies until he is recorded with Allaah as a liar.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
3. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah
be upon him) warned against mocking
people and hurting their feelings, because that is the path that leads to
hatred and grudges.
(Sahih Muslim)
4. Narrated by Mu’aawiyah ibn Haydah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the
Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Woe to the one who
speaks and tells lies in order to make the people laugh; woe to him, woe to
him.’”
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi)
5. Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allaah be pleased with
him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
"The signs of a hypocrite are three: Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie, Whenever
he promises, he always breaks it (his promise) and If you trust him, he proves
to be dishonest. (If you keep something as a trust with him, he will not return
it.
(Sahih Bukhari)
