How To Use The Toilet In Islam

Praise be to Allaah (swt)

These are some of the rules and manners prescribed by the sharee’ah of Islam about how to use the toilet and purification steps after using the toilet.

These etiquettes of using the toilet were taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) which are as follows:

1. Do Not Uncover Your Awrah (Private Part)

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allaah be pleased with him) that
“When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to relieve himself, he would not raise his garment until he was close to the ground.”

(Jami at-Tirmidhi))

Narrated by AbuSa’id al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the
Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When two persons go together for relieving themselves uncovering their private parts and talking together, Allaah, the Great and Majestic, becomes wrathful at this (action)."

(Abu Dawood)

2. Dua (Supplication) While Entering Toilet

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allaah be pleased with him) that
"When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter the toilet 'He said:

Allahumma in-nee a'oothu bika minal khubu-thee wal khabaa ith.

Translation:

O Allaah, I seek refuge with you from all evil and evil-doers.

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi)

[Enter the toilet with the left foot first]

3. Dua (Supplication) While Leaving Toilet

Narrated by Anas bin Malk (may Allaah be pleased with him) that "when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) would leave the toilet "He said:

Ghufranak, alhamdu lillah-hil lazee-aaz haba annil-aaza wa'aafani

Translation:

O Allaah, I seek forgiveness and pardon from You, All Praise be to Allaah, who removed the difficulty from me and gave me ease (relief)

(Abu Dawood)

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) "passed by two graves. He said: ‘These two are being punished. And they are not being punished for something major. As for this one, he would not protect himself from his urine. As for this one, he used to spread Namimah (slander).’”

(Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

6. Do Not Remove Najaasah (Impurity) With Your Right Hand
