Why Sitting On Grave Is Haram?

Question

One day I visited my mother grave, and I sat down on her grave while praying for her. When someone noticed my action, he corrected me and said it is haram. Could you please give proofs from the Quran or the Sunnah of Muhammad (Pbuh) that prohibit this?

Answer

Praise be to Allaah (SWT)

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is much better for one of you to sit on a live coal, which will burn his clothes and get to his skin than to sit on a grave."

[Sahih Muslim]

Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah (May Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that the graves should be plastered (made into permanent structures), used as sitting places (for the people) or building over them".

[Sahih Muslim]

Narrated by Abu Marthad Kannaz bin Husain (May Allaah be pleased with him) that: he heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Do not offer Solaat (prayer) facing the graves and do not sit on them.''

[Sahih Muslim].

Commentary:

1. It is prohibited to face the graves while offering Solaat. Its reason seems to be that it creates a resemblance to polytheists. Moreover, it has a trace of reverence for someone other than Allaah, which takes one towards Shirk.

2. It is forbidden for Muslims to sit on the graves because it is disrespect of man whom Allaah has honoured.

Therefore Muslims should avoid both practices mentioned above. Imam An-Nawawi said: Our companions (the scholars) said that it is Makruh (undesirable) to plaster the grave; while sitting, leaning against it or resting on it is Haram (forbidden).
